02 Plumage

You already have vein or eye. Today you make the other one, reduce both, and overlay them the way the statement ring is built: thin slices, points out, black still showing.

Slice trays: wing, eye, leaf, overlay inventory

Done looks like

Clock

  1. 0:00 — Recap 01 in fifteen minutes, or skip if yesterday. Put finished rings on the table again.
  2. 0:20 — Build the track you did not make in 01. Keep it small.
  3. 1:20 — Optional third: a teal/bronze hairline in the wrap only — peacock sheen, not a new bird. No fourth color story.
  4. 2:00 — Light reduction. Distortion talk: what stretching does to an oval eye.
  5. 3:00 — Lunch. Oven preheat. Name on tiles.
  6. 3:20 — Slice both canes thin. Veneer a scrap black sheet if a cane is too short to overlay.
  7. 3:50 — Overlay cluster: black base disc, mix eye slices and cell slices, leave field. Do not glue them into a ball.
  8. 4:20 — Slice board for the host photo. Bake samples.
  9. 4:50 — Photograph the boards. That is the class picture.

Overlay rules (this is the jewelry)

RuleWhy
Points outward, like scalesReads as wing / petal, not a sandwich
Mix tracks on one discHer ring is lime eyes and monarch, not one motif
Black must still showWithout field it becomes a fruit tart
5–9 slicesMore is a lump. The disc ring is the quiet sister.
Thin slicesThick plugs will not layer

If your 01 cane died

Cut a window, restack, or pull a strip of demo cane from the instructor tray. You still overlay. You do not spend the afternoon rebuilding a loaf from zero unless there is time after the cluster is on the tile.
